This historic district between Bab Zuweila and the Citadel is one of the densest surviving quarters of medieval Cairo, threaded with mosques, tombs, workshops and old houses along narrow lanes. Long a center of traditional crafts such as metalwork, tentmaking and woodturning, it has been the focus of major conservation efforts that restored monuments and revived local trades. Walking its streets reveals layers of Mamluk and Ottoman architecture amid everyday life.
