This large cathedral in the Abbasia district serves as the principal seat of the Coptic Orthodox Church and was consecrated in the late 1960s. Named for the evangelist traditionally regarded as the founder of Christianity in Egypt, it can hold several thousand worshippers beneath a broad dome. Relics associated with Saint Mark are enshrined within. As the ceremonial center of the largest Christian community in the Middle East, it hosts major liturgies and papal events, and its scale reflects the modern revival of Coptic life.
