This fortified gate in the northern wall of medieval Cairo was rebuilt in the late eleventh century by the Fatimid vizier Badr al-Jamali using massive squared stones. Its two rectangular towers are carved with shields and other martial emblems, and later French inscriptions from Napoleon's occupation still mark the towers, which were renamed after officers. Visitors can walk the ramparts between here and Bab al-Futuh, passing through the defensive corridors within the wall.
