One of the surviving gates in the northern wall of the Fatimid city, this eleventh-century structure is flanked by rounded towers of dressed stone and once formed a principal entrance for caravans and armies. It stands close to the neighboring Bab al-Nasr, and the connecting stretch of wall can be walked, offering views over the roofs of the al-Gamaliya district. Decorative carved motifs, arrow slits and defensive galleries show the military engineering of the period.
