This vast historic cemetery east of the old city, part of the sprawling necropolis known as the City of the Dead, contains some of the finest funerary architecture in Cairo. Among its domed mausolea and tomb-mosques stand the celebrated complexes of Mamluk sultans, admired for their carved stone domes and slender minarets. For centuries families have lived among the graves, creating an extraordinary landscape where residential lanes wind between monumental tombs.
