The religious centre of Tashkent, this ensemble of mosques, madrasas and mausolea grew around the tomb of an early Islamic saint and scholar of the city. Restored and expanded in recent decades, it features twin minarets, a grand congregational mosque and a library that safeguards one of the world's oldest Qurans, a blood-stained manuscript traditionally attributed to the Caliph Uthman. Pilgrims and visitors move between the tiled prayer halls and shaded courtyards.
