Gereja Sion is the oldest surviving church in Jakarta, completed in 1695 to serve the Portuguese-speaking community brought to Batavia during the colonial era. Its restrained baroque interior features a carved wooden pulpit, brass chandeliers, and an old organ, while the surrounding grounds once held a cemetery for prominent settlers. The plastered brick structure has weathered earthquakes and centuries of use as an active Protestant congregation. Standing near the old town station, it recalls the layered religious history of the port city.
