The Wayang Museum in Jakarta's old town is devoted to the Indonesian art of shadow and rod puppetry, a tradition recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. Its collection ranges across leather shadow puppets, three-dimensional wooden figures, and masks gathered from around the archipelago and abroad. Occupying a colonial building on the site of an old Dutch church, the museum also stages weekend performances of the storytelling and stagecraft behind the form. Displays explain the epics that puppeteers bring to life.
