Established when the capital was founded in the late eighteenth century, this shrine near the Grand Palace enshrines the city's foundation pillar, believed to house the guardian spirit of Bangkok. Housed in an ornate white and gold pavilion topped with a slender spire, the site is a focus of daily worship, with visitors offering flowers, incense and small performances of classical dance in fulfilment of vows. It embodies traditional beliefs surrounding the ritual founding of Thai cities.
