Regarded as the national Hindu temple of Bangladesh, Dhakeshwari Temple in old Dhaka is a centuries-old complex dedicated to the goddess after whom the city is said to be named. The compound contains several shrines, courtyards and colourful temple structures where daily worship and major Hindu festivals take place. During the Durga Puja season the temple becomes a focal point of celebration for the country's Hindu community. Its historic significance and living religious role make it one of the most important places of worship in the capital.
