On the western bank of the Sabarmati River, this simple riverside ashram was Mahatma Gandhi's home for over a decade and the launch point of the famous Salt March. Whitewashed cottages, including the one Gandhi occupied, sit among trees and lawns, now serving as a museum of his life and the independence movement. Exhibits display letters, photographs, his spinning wheel and personal effects with quiet restraint. The tranquil grounds beside the river attract visitors from across the world seeking to understand the roots of nonviolent resistance.
