Tucked into the Walkeshwar neighbourhood on Malabar Hill, this ancient stepped water tank is ringed by small temples and old dharamshalas. According to legend it was created by a hero of the Ramayana, and its rectangular stone steps descend to sacred waters used in Hindu rituals. Despite the surrounding high-rises, the precinct retains a village-like calm, with priests and pilgrims moving among shrines. A music festival held on its banks each winter draws classical performers to this striking corner of Mumbai.
