A historic city gate on the west bank of the Taedong River in Pyongyang, part of the fortifications that once guarded the old walled town. The present two-story wooden pavilion atop a stone arch dates in its restored form to the 17th century, though the site's defensive role reaches back much further. Standing near a nearby bell pavilion, it is one of the few surviving pieces of the capital's pre-modern architecture amid the monumental 20th-century cityscape, and it is designated a national treasure and shown on cultural itineraries.
