The vast central ceremonial plaza of Pyongyang, laid out in the mid-20th century on the west bank of the Taedong River and used for the mass military parades, rallies, and choreographed gatherings for which the capital is known. Ringed by monumental government buildings, museums, and the grand library, its granite expanse is marked with position points for participants in the huge coordinated events. Across the river stands the tower embodying the state ideology. The square is a standard stop on guided city tours.
