A group of sea caves at the base of the Rock's eastern cliffs, recognised as a World Heritage Site for their evidence of Neanderthal occupation. Excavations have revealed hearths, tools and traces of the plants and animals these early humans used, along with engravings cut into the cave floor. The caves offer rare insight into some of the last Neanderthal communities in Europe. Access is restricted and usually arranged through guided visits owing to the fragile archaeology.
