The national museum of Kosovo occupies a handsome Austro-Hungarian style building from the early 20th century in the centre of Pristina, originally constructed as a military headquarters under Ottoman and later administrations. Its collections span archaeology, ethnography and history, tracing the region from prehistory through the Roman and Ottoman periods to modern times. Among its most celebrated objects is a Neolithic terracotta figurine known as the Goddess on the Throne, an emblem of the country's ancient heritage.
