The Hospital in the Rock is a museum set within a network of tunnels and caves beneath Castle Hill in Buda, originally excavated as an emergency hospital and air-raid shelter. Pressed into use during the siege of Budapest in the Second World War and again during the 1956 uprising, its wards, operating theatres, and dormitories are preserved with period equipment and wax figures. Later converted into a secret nuclear bunker during the Cold War, the complex illustrates the dramatic history that unfolded within the rock beneath the palace.
