The Matthias Fountain is an elaborate bronze monument set into the western courtyard of Buda Castle, completed in 1904. It depicts a hunting scene from the reign of the Renaissance king Matthias Corvinus, showing the monarch with his dogs and companions cascading over rocky ledges into a basin below. Inspired by a romantic legend of the king and a peasant girl, the sculptural group is one of the most admired public fountains in Budapest. Its dramatic staging against the castle wall makes it a favourite backdrop for visitors.
