Tucked into a steep gorge on the Water of Leith just west of the city centre, this former milling community retains a village atmosphere within walking distance of Princes Street. For centuries it was a hub of grain milling and baking, and old millstones and inscriptions can still be spotted among the buildings. The distinctive Well Court, with its red-tiled roofs and courtyard, was built in the 1880s as model housing for workers. A riverside walkway links the village to galleries and the Dean Bridge above.
