Edinburgh Castle occupies the summit of a volcanic plug of dolerite at the head of the Royal Mile in Scotland's capital, and has served as a royal residence, military garrison, and place of state imprisonment across many centuries. The castle houses the Scottish Crown Jewels, the Stone of Destiny, and the Scottish National War Memorial. The one o'clock gun fired daily from the Half Moon Battery has been a time signal for the city since 1861.
