This ornate cast-iron fountain stands in West Princes Street Gardens beneath the crag of Edinburgh Castle, making it one of the most photographed spots in the city. Cast in France in the 1860s and shown at the Great London Exposition, it was bought by gunmaker Daniel Ross and shipped north in pieces. Painted turquoise and gold, it features mermaids, cherubs and a female figure crowning the top. A major restoration completed in 2018 returned its elaborate detailing and vivid colour scheme to full effect.
