Two cities face each other across Edinburgh's valley gardens: the medieval Old Town tumbling down its ridge beneath the castle, and the Georgian New Town, whose disciplined neoclassical squares and terraces influenced town planning across Europe from the 18th century onward. Capital of Scotland since the 15th century, Edinburgh owes its character to this striking contrast, which UNESCO recognized with World Heritage inscription in 1995.
