Marble Arch is a white Carrara marble triumphal arch designed by John Nash in the 1820s, originally as a ceremonial gateway to Buckingham Palace. It was moved to its present site near the northeast corner of Hyde Park in 1851 when the palace was enlarged, and now stands stranded on a traffic island. The design draws on the Arch of Constantine in Rome, and by tradition only royalty and certain regiments may pass through its central gate. Nearby once stood the Tyburn gallows, London's chief execution site.
