Chapter I · Bangui · 3 places

Bangui

The Cathedral of Notre-Dame is the principal Catholic church of Bangui and seat of the archdiocese, a brick landmark rising above the low skyline of the Central African capital. Built in the colonial era, its warm masonry and twin towers make it one of the city's most recognisable buildings. The cathedral gained wider attention when it served as a place of interfaith gestures during periods of conflict in the country. It remains a centre of religious life and a symbol of Bangui's endurance through political turmoil.

Sangha-Mbaéré

In the country's far southwest, this rainforest reserve surrounds Dzanga Bai, a mineral clearing where dozens of forest elephants gather daily alongside bongos and forest buffalo. Habituated western lowland gorilla tracking and walks with Ba'Aka guides round out a world-class primate destination.

The importance of this park derives from its wealth of flora and fauna. Its vast savannahs are home to a wide variety of species: black rhinoceroses, elephants, cheetahs, leopards, wild dogs, red-fronted gazelles and buffalo, while various types of waterfowl are to be found in the northern floodplains.
