Vast savannahs roll across Manovo-Gounda St Floris, sustaining leopards, elephants, red-fronted gazelles, cheetahs, wild dogs and herds of buffalo, while the floodplains along its northern edge draw great gatherings of waterfowl. Black rhinoceros also figured among the species for which UNESCO inscribed the park in 1988, a recognition of one of the Central African Republic's richest wildlife refuges.
