Astronomy anchored Kazan Federal University's scientific reputation, and two observatories tell that story: the city observatory of 1837, with its curved façade and three domed towers on the historic campus, and the leafy suburban Engelhardt Observatory to the west, its instruments and residences set in parkland. Both remain intact, telescopes included, and now serve mainly education. UNESCO placed the pair on the World Heritage List in 2023.
