Two worlds meet inside the walls of the Kazan Kremlin: the last surviving Tatar fortress in Russia, heir to the Golden Horde and the Kazan Khanate, was seized by Ivan the Terrible in 1552 and remade as the Christian stronghold of the Volga lands. Today the Qolşärif Mosque stands beside the Annunciation Cathedral within ramparts enclosing buildings of the 16th to 19th centuries over far older foundations. UNESCO inscribed the complex in 2000.
