Europe's largest medieval market square anchors Kraków, the royal capital of old Poland spread beneath Wawel Castle. The merchants' town chartered in the 13th century keeps its palaces, churches and burgher houses; Kazimierz preserves centuries of Jewish life and its synagogues; the Jagiellonian University and the cathedral where Polish kings lie buried complete the ensemble. Kraków was inscribed by UNESCO in 1978, among the very first World Heritage Sites.
