The Florian Gate is the best-preserved of the medieval gates that once pierced Kraków's defensive walls, marking the start of the Royal Route toward Wawel. Built around the late 13th century, the square brick tower rises several storeys and is topped by a later Baroque cupola. Fragments of the old town wall extend on either side, and the outer face carries a relief of Saint Florian, the city's protector against fire. Today the surviving wall alongside is used by artists to display and sell paintings.
