Fjord-like and mountain-walled, the Bay of Kotor sheltered a medieval harbour town whose masons and icon painters ran schools famous across the Adriatic. Kotor's Romanesque churches and town walls were badly shaken by an earthquake in 1979 — the same year UNESCO inscribed the region as World Heritage — and restoration went ahead largely with UNESCO's assistance. Today its marble lanes fill the narrow space between sea and cliff.
