Rising over the Square of Arms just inside the main gate of Kotor, this stone clock tower was built in the early 17th century during Venetian rule and remains one of the most photographed features of the old town. Its square shaft leans slightly, the result of earthquakes that have shaken the region over the centuries. A pyramidal roof caps the belfry, and the clock face overlooks the busy square below. At its base stands a stone pillory once used to display and shame wrongdoers, a reminder of the town's civic past.
