Talavera tiles glaze the facades of Puebla in blues and yellows, the signature of a city that fused European and American tastes into its own strain of Baroque. Founded on empty ground in 1531 beneath the volcano Popocatepetl, it preserves a 16th- and 17th-century cathedral, the old archbishop's palace and streets of tiled houses about 100 kilometres east of Mexico City. UNESCO inscribed the historic centre of Puebla in 1987.
