Henley Beach is one of Adelaide's classic seaside suburbs, fronting the calm waters of Gulf St Vincent about twelve kilometres west of the city centre. Henley Square is the focus. The swimming is gentle. Sheltered from ocean swell, the water is generally calm and shallow near shore, making it well suited to families and casual swimmers rather than surfers. The long, flat sand is popular for walking, and the paved esplanade links north and south to neighbouring beach suburbs such as Grange and West Beach.

Practical notes: Henley Beach is reached by bus from the city or a short drive, with parking that fills on hot summer days; the nearest train and tram lines connect to the coast a little further out. The square and esplanade are step-free, and beach access ramps help, though the sand is soft. The warm months from November to March bring the best swimming and the liveliest square. Combine a swim and a meal with a sunset over the jetty for the quintessential Adelaide beach evening. The square's cafes and gelato bars stay busy well into the evening in summer, and the long, flat sands north and south of the jetty invite extended walks toward the neighbouring beach suburbs of Grange and Semaphore, each with its own heritage jetty and relaxed seaside character.
