This early colonial prison northwest of central Adelaide opened in 1841 and operated for nearly a century and a half, making it one of the oldest surviving public buildings in South Australia. Ringed by high stone walls, its cell blocks, gallows and exercise yards housed thousands of prisoners and saw a number of executions. Now preserved as a heritage site, it offers daytime tours and evening ghost tours that recount its grim history and the stories of those confined within.
