Bukit Bintang

Kuala Lumpur's shopping and nightlife core. Bukit Bintang, meaning "Star Hill," is the main retail and entertainment district of Kuala Lumpur, centred on the wide boulevard of Jalan Bukit Bintang. Once a quieter area of cinemas and low-rise shops, it has grown into a dense corridor of malls, hotels, restaurants and bars that stays busy well into the night.

A concentration of retail and food. The district strings together some of the city's best-known shopping centres, from the upscale Pavilion Kuala Lumpur to the youth-oriented Lot 10, Sungei Wang and Fahrenheit malls, all linked by covered walkways and a monorail line. Running off the main street, Jalan Alor transforms each evening into an open-air hawker street where dozens of stalls serve Malaysian-Chinese seafood, satay, noodles and tropical fruit under strings of red lanterns.

Contrasting moods. A few steps away, the leafy lane of Changkat Bukit Bintang holds a cluster of bars, lounges and international restaurants, while nearby streets shelter reflexology parlours, boutique hotels and pockets of older shophouses. The mix ranges from luxury flagship stores to bustling street food, giving the area a round-the-clock energy that few other parts of the city can match. Street performers, buskers and pavement vendors work the main crossing, and covered elevated walkways make it possible to move between the malls without stepping into the tropical downpours.

Visiting. Bukit Bintang is served by its own monorail station and an MRT interchange, making it one of the easiest districts to reach. There is no admission to the streets themselves, and costs range from cheap hawker meals to premium mall dining. The area is at its liveliest from early evening onward; come hungry, wear light clothing for the humid nights, and be prepared for crowds along Jalan Alor and the main boulevard.
