The Guandi Temple in Kuala Lumpur's Chinatown is dedicated to Guan Di, the deified warrior revered as a god of war, loyalty and prosperity. Established in the late nineteenth century by Cantonese immigrants, its incense-darkened hall houses an old bronze Guan Dao blade that worshippers touch for strength and good fortune. Red lanterns, carved beams and a constant haze of incense give the modest building an atmospheric intensity amid the street market.
