Signal Hill (Cape Town)

Signal Hill rises beside Lion's Head above central Cape Town, a low ridge between Table Mountain and the sea that doubles as one of the world's most scenic urban paragliding launches. Pilots take off from its slopes and glide down toward the Atlantic seaboard, landing near the beaches of Sea Point or Camps Bay.

Tandem paragliding is the main activity, flown by qualified pilots so beginners need no training — a short run off the grassy launch leads to a smooth descent with the city bowl, the harbour and Table Mountain filling the view. Flights are usually short, ten to twenty minutes, and depend closely on wind direction and strength, with pilots choosing Signal Hill or the higher Lion's Head launch to suit the day. The proximity of a major city to a genuine mountain-and-sea flight is the site's rare appeal.

Signal Hill is a destination in itself even without flying — a road runs to the top for sweeping sunset views, and the historic Noon Gun fires daily from its slopes. Nearby, Lion's Head is a popular hike, and Table Mountain's cableway and the abseil off its summit add more adventure within minutes of the launch.

The best flying is in the drier summer, roughly November to March, though Cape Town's famous south-easterly wind can ground flights on any given day, so morning slots and flexibility help. Winter brings calmer spells between fronts. Because conditions change fast over the peninsula, operators may reschedule at short notice; keep the plan loose and combine flying with a hike or the cableway.
