A long, lively thoroughfare running through central Cape Town, lined with Victorian and Edwardian buildings whose wrought-iron balconies overhang the pavement. Once a residential and trading street, it is now known for bookshops, cafes, bars and backpacker lodges, and forms the spine of the city's nightlife. The street also holds historic mosques, a Turkish bathhouse and antique dealers. Its mix of preserved architecture and street life makes it a defining stretch of the old city centre and a popular walking route.
