The premier national art museum of the country, set beside the Company's Garden in the heart of Cape Town. Opened in its purpose-built home in 1930, it holds collections of South African, African and European art ranging from historical paintings to contemporary works and traditional beadwork and sculpture. Rotating exhibitions foreground previously marginalised artists and address the nation's social history. The gallery forms part of the Iziko group of museums near the parliamentary precinct.
