Bhrigu Lake

Bhrigu Lake is a high glacial tarn at about 4,300 metres on the ridge east of the Kullu valley, named for the sage Bhrigu who is said to have meditated on its shores. Its still, changeable waters sit in an open bowl of alpine meadow with the Dhauladhar and Pir Panjal ranges rimming the horizon.

Its appeal is the speed with which it delivers true high-alpine scenery. Unlike many Himalayan treks that spend days in forest, the route breaks quickly onto rolling grassland grazed by Gaddi shepherds' flocks, giving wide skies and 360-degree ridgelines within a short walk of Manali.

On the trail the trek runs about three to four days, usually from Gulaba or Jalori above the Rohtang road, camping in the meadows before an early climb to the lake. Graded moderate, it suits reasonably fit first-timers, though the altitude is felt and the weather turns fast; late-season snow can bury the final slope.

Practical notes: camping logistics are handled by operators, and a small forest fee applies near the trailhead. May to June brings green meadows and lingering snow patches around the lake, while September to October offers crisp, clear post-monsoon air; the lake freezes and the approach closes under snow in winter.
