Jaipur's Jantar Mantar looks like sculpture but works like an instrument. Some 20 monumental masonry devices, built in the early 18th century for naked-eye observation of the heavens, make this the most complete and best preserved of India's historic observatories — the cosmological vision of a scholarly prince at the close of the Mughal era, rendered in stone. UNESCO inscribed the observatory in 2010.
