The City Palace of Jaipur is a sprawling complex of courtyards, gardens, and buildings begun by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II in the early eighteenth century and expanded by successive rulers. The Chandra Mahal at its centre, seven storeys tall, remains the residence of the erstwhile royal family, while the Mubarak Mahal and Diwan-i-Khas are open to visitors as a museum displaying royal textiles, arms, and carriages. The Peacock Courtyard, with its four elaborately painted gates representing the four seasons, is the most photographed space in the complex.
