Strasbourg wears two histories at once. Its Grande-Île, the island old town wrapped around a soaring cathedral, was joined by the Neustadt — a grand new quarter laid out under German rule between 1871 and 1918 that grafted Germanic architecture onto boulevards of Haussmannian inspiration. Together they produced a cityscape found nowhere else. UNESCO first inscribed the Grande-Île as a World Heritage Site in 1988, later extending it to embrace the Neustadt.
