This monumental imperial palace was built during the German administration of Strasbourg as a residence for the emperor, anchoring the grand Place de la République. Its heavy domed silhouette and lavish stonework embody the ambitious town-planning of the Neustadt district laid out in the late nineteenth century. Ringed by ministries and a theatre in the same era's style, it reflects a period when the city was reshaped as a provincial capital. Today it houses cultural heritage offices, and its facade remains a landmark of the imperial quarter.
