Spread across a warren of connected old houses along the river Ill, this museum of regional folk life recreates the interiors, crafts, and traditions of rural Alsace. Visitors climb creaking wooden staircases and cross timbered galleries to reach rooms furnished with painted furniture, costumes, toys, and religious objects. The collection captures the distinctive material culture of the region between France and Germany. The atmospheric building itself, a cluster of Renaissance-era dwellings, is as much an exhibit as the objects it holds.
