The Argentine Lake District is centred on the town of Bariloche in northern Patagonia, where the Andes transition from the high cordillera to a landscape of deep glacial lakes, Valdivian temperate rainforest, and Germanic resort architecture imported by nineteenth-century Swiss and German settlers. The Circuito Chico road route around Lago Nahuel Huapi passes viewpoints above intensely blue water framed by beech and coihue forest. In winter, the Cerro Catedral ski area above the lake is the largest ski resort in the southern hemisphere.
