Copacabana is a four-kilometre crescent of sand in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro, backed by a wave-patterned mosaic promenade designed by Roberto Burle Marx. The beach is one of the most densely used urban strands in the world, animated throughout the day by volleyball, football, and the informal rhythms of carioca street life. The Forte de Copacabana at the beach's southern end houses a military history museum with views across both the Atlantic and the Sugarloaf mountain.
