This cog railway climbs the steep forested slopes of Corcovado mountain to the base of the famous statue, opened in 1884 and among the earliest electrified rack lines in the world. The narrow-gauge train ascends through the dense Tijuca Forest, offering glimpses of the city, lagoon and bay between the trees on the twenty-minute journey. Small green carriages depart from a station in the Cosme Velho neighbourhood on a fixed schedule. The ride is both a practical route to the summit and a scenic experience through protected Atlantic rainforest.
