Ipanema is a beachfront neighbourhood in Rio de Janeiro whose four-kilometre arc of fine white sand has made it one of the most internationally recognised urban beaches in the world. The beach is divided informally into social zones, each with its own regular crowd, separated by numbered lifeguard posts. The backdrop of the twin peaks of Dois Irmãos rising above the Vidigal hillside gives the shoreline a distinctive photographic silhouette.
