Quebec City is the only walled city north of Mexico retaining its complete fortification system, a designation reflected in its inclusion within the Historic District of Old Quebec UNESCO World Heritage Site. The 4.6-kilometre circuit of walls encompasses bastions, gates, and cannon emplacements dating from French colonial construction through British improvements in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The rampart promenade offers framed views alternating between the historic upper town and the St. Lawrence River below.
